What Are Antioxidants & Why Do You Need Them?

In a recent study from the National Cancer Institute, the report shows that:

  • Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals.
  • Laboratory and animal research have shown that antioxidants help prevent the free radical damage that is associated with cancer.
  • Antioxidants are provided by a healthy diet that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables.

The Enemy: Free Radicals

Free radicals are the by-products of a normal and necessary event- the burning of oxygen by cells in your body to produce energy. These by-products are damaged molecules. They are missing an electron, and they ‘want’ one badly…badly enough to attack any nearby molecule get it. If they take electrons from important components in your body, such as DNA (your body’s master plan for reproducing cells) or from protein or fat, they do damage to those cells and precipitate health problems.

Not only that, when a free radical reacts with a non-radical, a free radical chain reaction results and new free radicals are formed, compounding the problem. Over time, the cumulative effects of free radicals can contribute to premature aging and certain diseases such as artery and heart disease, arthritis, cataracts, and cancer. Recent Study Shows Fiber Can Lower Your Risk Of Dying

Studies show that those with the highest intake of fiber have a significantly lower risk of dying of any cause. A recently published study by the National Cancer Institute that included almost 400,000 participants found that for every 10-gram increase in fiber intake, risk of death dropped 12% in men and 15% in women.

Why Do So Many Of Us Get Sick During The Holidays?

We spend more time and hard earned money at the doctor’s office at the beginning of the year due to flu season or just not “feeling” well. The reason you ask? It’s simple! Our experts have told us already! It’s the change in weather!

Mmmm, maybe not. I say, you are on overload!

Think about it-We start celebrating towards the end of October. We have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then New Years. What are we doing except eating, eating more, eating more again, and then looking for some loose pants so you can finish your plate!

Do you look at What you are eating? We start with candy, move to chocolate, then cakes/pies, and then alcohol (to send off for our new years resolutions. **wink wink**) Now and again through the holidays we dabble in some protein.

So, what happens to your beautiful digestive system? You go on overload and your system says, “Enough is enough! Shut Down!” This way it can start letting go of the phlem, mucus, and drain the system . So for the next 2 to 3 months we will all be talking about how terrible the weather is and how it affects our health. (Those poor cavemen! How ever did they get through the night without their Nyquil every time the weather changed?!)

Does anyone really take the time to think about ‘HOW’ or ‘WHAT’ happens to the system with all of that sugar? (Or the substitute which is worse!) How to counter act that affect is the question.

Here are some of my tips to get you started:

1. Before breakfast, drink 1 cup 8 to 10 oz. of warm water with one tablespoon of Braggs apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey.  (local or dark honey is better)

2. One cup of warm water with 1/2 fresh lemon , sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon and one tablespoon of honey.

3. Make a pitcher of water, with one grapefruit, one orange and one lemon, cut each fruit in half, squeeze fruit and insert in water with rind and let it soak.  as you drink water, keep adding water and change fruits every two days.

Delicious!!! Drink all day and flush system. Enjoy!

This Is Why Most People Are Sick

What many people are unaware of is the fact that most of our health issues stem from our stomach and digestion. When our stomach gets clogged and things are not “flowing” properly, our body starts to run sluggish and then sickness can set in.

Have you ever seen clogged pipes whether in your kitchen or your car? That is what’s happening inside you:

Just think about if you have ever had gas or experienced bloating, this is because your system is backed up. Our intestinal tract is 30 feet long which means there is a lot of room in there for things to get murky and sticky. Right now you have hardened food stuck to your intestinal walls sitting there and making it hard for you to process new food.

When your intestines get clogged, food is not being digested properly which means you:

  • Become foggy and forgetful

Step 1 – Heat up 8 ounces of water.

Step 2 – Pour 2 ounces of apple juice (for taste) and the warm water in a blender

Step 3 – Add 1 tablespoon of the Super Colon Cleanse

Step 4 – Add 1 tablespoon of Organic Olive Oil (cold pressed)

Can The Government Prevent Access To Health Supplements?

The shifting regulations are confusing, complicated and esoteric, and really difficult to get your brain around. But the bottom line isn’t. We are in danger of losing our (nearly) unfettered access to dietary supplements.

A United Nations trade commission—Codex Alimentarius (Latin for “food code”)—meeting in Rome, approved a severely restrictive regulatory code for dietary supplements. Without counter-action, that code is destined to be enforced by many government regulatory agencies around the world in order to “harmonize” food trade.

The issue is obscured within a maze of assorted bureaucracies, which has prevented even the brightest and best-informed industry observers from understanding what is happening. But there now appears to be a critical mass, as those who earlier discounted the danger of losing our right to supplements are now calling it a real possibility.

Worse, as investigative reporter Peter Byrne puts it, “…the emerging Codex regulations on vitamins and mineral supplements have almost nothing to do with promoting human health and everything to do with facilitating the profits of multinational food and chemical corporations.”

Although the Codex commission has been setting rules on the manufacture and distribution of food for more than 40 years, it’s the “Draft Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Supplements” just passed that’s expected to thrust into motion a cascade of events that, without intervention, could eventually override our Dietary Supplement, Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994. Health observers fear that the levels will be set so low that doses of many vital nutrients providing health benefits would be essentially outlawed.

In the months ahead, activists both here and abroad will be trying to figure out options for heading off this multi-headed agency behemoth intent on banning access to thousands of dietary supplements worldwide. (Byrne says it would effectively ban 300 of the 420 forms of vitamins and minerals present in the United Kingdom market). The perspective of many is that this is ultimately the grand design—engineered by multinational companies in order to edge out competition and reap the biggest rewards from “harmonization.” Reportedly, it is being fueled by an active disinformation campaign to keep the confusion roiling.

If we want to maintain our health freedoms, we’re going to have to rally. We have a smart ally in Jim Turner—an action-oriented regulatory lawyer in the food and supplements industry. As the board chair of the watchdog organization Citizens for Health, he’s been in Rome plotting strategy with health advocates from other countries.

The health benefits of high-dose vitamins and mineral supplements, along with herbs and other naturally occurring substances, have been thoroughly established in both their efficacy and safety. To imagine that “forward thinking” industrialized countries would reject solid science in order to promote the economic interests of multinational pharmaceutical, food and agricultural corporations is consistent with many other troubling aspects of the globalization process.

Turner’s group, Citizens for Health, has ongoing news of developments on its website and does a good job of marshalling forces to take action. There are no clear-cut answers at this time but we need to galvanize support and be ready, because, as Citizens for Health puts it, “The Codex recommended vitamin and mineral guidelines could begin the process of undermining American law unless consumers get organized now to support DSHEA for adoption as the international vitamin and mineral trade standard.”

Green Tea, Berries, & Spicy Food For Cancer?

Among the health-obsessed, it seems like there’s a new wellness-boosting super food every week. But the more food fad-resistant among us will be interested to learn that three celebrated cancer-fighting agents have recently been substantiated by further studies.

According to findings presented at the International Research Conference on Food, Nutrition and Cancer, green tea, berries and spicy foods well deserve to remain at the top of the cancer-fighting menu.

Recent studies conducted at the University of Rochester Medical Center showed that green tea’s active anticancer substance EGCG halts cancer in its tracks, binding with pro-cancer proteins and interfering with their ability to activate cancer cells.

Meanwhile, researchers at Ohio State University found that high doses of ellagic acid, a phytochemical found in berries, can decrease instances of digestive tract tumors by as much as 80 percent.

And finally, Korean scientists are considering harnessing the inflammation-inhibiting power of spicy foods to inhibit tumors. Further research is underway on all of these foods, so keep enjoying them. You’ll likely thank yourself later.

Sunflower Seeds For A Healthy Heart

Crack the shell, swallow the seed, save your heart. Of all the commonly eaten nuts and seeds, sunflower kernels boast the highest concentration of a class of plant chemicals shown to reduce cholesterol levels and improve heart health, according to a new study from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Analyzing 27 types of nuts and seeds, chemists found that sunflower kernels and pistachios were the most phytosterol-rich among those typically eaten as snack foods. (Sesame seed and wheat germ were ranked highest overall, but neither is frequently consumed as an individual food.)

LA-based dietitian Matt Ruscigno, R.D., recommends snacking on a quarter-cup serving of nuts and seeds at least five times a week.

“They’re an excellent source of protein, micronutrients, vitamin E and essential fatty acids,” he says.“And their culinary use is extremely versatile—from stir-fries to sauces and even desserts, nuts and seeds can easily be incorporated into a healthy diet.”

Even though the study ranked walnuts and peanuts among the lowest in phytosterol content, each possesses other healthful properties, notes study author Katherine M. Phillips, Ph.D.

“For example, walnuts are found to be very high in antioxidants,” Phillips says. “This highlights the importance of not making food choices based on one single component.”
