If you are like most people around this time of year, your nose might feel congested and a cold or flu could be coming on.

We recently came across the Vicks Vapor shower disks and discovered that these things really work! However, we were a bit concerned about a couple of the ingredients in there and thought how great it would be if we could make our own 100% natural versions.

Well, we discovered that there is a natural alternative to making your own shower disks and here is what you need to do:

Ingredients

Directions

Step 1 – Add 3 cups of baking soda to a mixing bowl

Step 2 – Very slowly stir in some water so that it creates a thick paste (you do not want it thin).

Step 3 – Add 15 drops of the eucalyptus, rosemary, and lavender oil (each). So it should total 45 drops.

Step 4 – Scoop it out and fill each muffin tin about 2/3 of the way.

Step 5 – Bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Let it sit for at least 15 hours so they harden (can take up to 24 hours)

Step 6 – When you take a shower put one in there with you and make sure the water is hot enough so that the vapors fill your shower with the wonderful essential oils

As the cold and flu season is upon us, many people will experience a cough in some way shape or form (Hopefully nothing too serious). Here are 5 natural ways you can treat a cough and you will notice each one includes raw honey!

1. Lemon with Raw Honey

Just squeeze the juice from one lemon and add a tablespoon of raw honey. Stir it really well so that the honey blends evenly with the lemon juice.

2. Cinnamon & Raw Honey

1 tablespoon of raw honey and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Take this once every hour 3 times and then once every 3 to 4 hours.

3. Thyme and Raw Honey

Add 2 cup (16 ounces) of water to a small pot. Bring to a boil and add the thyme. Let this boil for about 5 to 7 minutes (with the thyme in it like a tea). Strain the liquids and add 1 tablespoon of raw honey.

4. Onions & Raw Honey

Chop a small piece of onion and mix it with some raw honey. Let it sit for 24 hours and then either eat it or put it in some horehound tea.

5. Lemon, Raw Honey, and Chamomile Tea

Juice one lemon and add 1 tablespoon of raw honey to some organic chamomile tea

Why Do So Many Of Us Get Sick During The Holidays?

natural health

[adsense]

We spend more time and hard earned money at the doctor’s office at the beginning of the year due to flu season or just not “feeling” well. The reason you ask? It’s simple! Our experts have told us already! It’s the change in weather!

Mmmm, maybe not. I say, you are on overload!

Think about it-We start celebrating towards the end of October. We have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and then New Years. What are we doing except eating, eating more, eating more again, and then looking for some loose pants so you can finish your plate!

Do you look at What you are eating? We start with candy, move to chocolate, then cakes/pies, and then alcohol (to send off for our new years resolutions. **wink wink**) Now and again through the holidays we dabble in some protein.

So, what happens to your beautiful digestive system? You go on overload and your system says, “Enough is enough! Shut Down!” This way it can start letting go of the phlem, mucus, and drain the system . So for the next 2 to 3 months we will all be talking about how terrible the weather is and how it affects our health. (Those poor cavemen! How ever did they get through the night without their Nyquil every time the weather changed?!)

Does anyone really take the time to think about ‘HOW’ or ‘WHAT’ happens to the system with all of that sugar? (Or the substitute which is worse!) How to counter act that affect is the question.

Here are some of my tips to get you started:

1. Before breakfast, drink 1 cup 8 to 10 oz. of warm water with one tablespoon of Braggs apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey.  (local or dark honey is better)

2. One cup of warm water with 1/2 fresh lemon , sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon and one tablespoon of honey.

3. Make a pitcher of water, with one grapefruit, one orange and one lemon, cut each fruit in half, squeeze fruit and insert in water with rind and let it soak.  as you drink water, keep adding water and change fruits every two days.

Delicious!!! Drink all day and flush system. Enjoy!

Note: If on Medications, consult with your doctor, before drinking this water.

When your body and immune system breakdown, the general response is a cold or flu. Ideally you  are creating the type of lifestyle where this does not happen. But, since we live in a busy world, it inevitable does. So what are some supplements that can aide with your cold and flu?

Olive Leaf: Nothing can spoil the spirit of the season faster than an untimely bout with the flu or common cold. The leaves of olive trees (Olea europaea) contain high concentrations of oleuropeins. These powerful compounds help eliminate foreign microbes while promoting a responsive immune system.

Zinc Lozenges: When taken at the first sign of a cold or flu, zinc lozenges shower the throat with a potent layer of virus-fighting compounds. This creates an environment that is unfavorable to many of the microbes and viral infections that commonly wreak havoc during the cold winter months.

You can find some here.

Ester-C with Bioflavonoids: Ester-C is a powerful free radical fighter that’s been used by millions to protect cells from the damaging effects of oxidation. In addition, it’s essential to virtually every aspect of human life. When coupled with bioflavonoids, the synergistic effects help increase its overall effectiveness and bioavailability.

Mushroom extracts: Medicinal mushroom extracts such as Shiitake, Reishi and Maitake contain some of the most powerful immune-boosting compounds available: beta-1, 3 glucans. These naturally occurring cell guardians have been shown to help support innate and adaptive immunity by stimulating the production of NK (natural killer) cells and white blood cells. Suggested dose: Will vary by formula, use as directed.
